Just like people, pets sometimes need lifesaving blood transfusions. Emergencies such as accidents, surgery complications, or certain illnesses can leave a dog or cat in urgent need of donated blood. At WellPet Vets, we want to make sure we always have blood on hand to help pets in crisis — but we can’t do it without the help of generous donor pets and their families.

Why Are Blood Donors So Important?

When a sick or injured pet comes to us and needs a transfusion, we often have only moments to act. Having access to safe, compatible blood can mean the difference between life and death. By enrolling your pet as a donor, you’re helping give another family the chance to take their beloved pet home again.

Who Can Be a Donor?

Not every pet is suitable for donation, but many are! Our vets will do a thorough health check and blood screening before your pet donates. 

DOGS:

  • Aged 1 – 8 years
  • Weigh over 25kg (but not overweight for their breed/size)
  • Healthy, up to date with vaccinations and parasite prevention

CATS:

  • Aged 1-8 years
  • Indoor only
  • Over 4.5kg (but not overweight)
  • Up to date with vaccinations and parasite prevention

 

Is It Safe for My Pet?

Yes – we take every precaution to ensure the safety and comfort of our donor pets. Donations are quick, safe, and pets often enjoy a cuddle, treat, and lots of praise afterwards. To keep the donation process calm and comfortable, all donor pets are sedated during the procedure.

Most pets tolerate it very well, and some even seem to enjoy the extra attention they get in recovery.

What’s in It for You and Your Pet?

Aside from the pride of knowing your pet is a hero, donor pets receive:

  • A complimentary health check before donation
  • Regular blood screening at no cost
  • A thank-you gift (and plenty of cuddles from our team!)
  • Owners receive an account credit — $50 for a standard donation and $100 for an emergency donation. This credit is applied directly to your pet’s file and can be used towards vaccinations, food, or any other services available at the clinic.
  • Their photo on our WellPet Blood Heroes Wall of Fame on the website, and social media posts (with owner consent).
