As the winter chill sets in, our senior pets can feel the effects of the cold just like we do- sometimes even more so. Cold weather can worsen joint stiffness, impact mobility, and challenge the immune system. That’s why winter is the perfect time to check in on your older pet’s health and comfort.
Here are some easy, vet-approved ways to help your ageing dog or cat stay warm, well, and happy this winter.
1. Provide Warm, Supportive Bedding
Senior pets are more sensitive to the cold and may struggle to regulate their body temperature.
- Use a soft, insulated bed off the floor and away from draughts.
- Orthopaedic or memory foam beds can help ease arthritis and joint pressure
2. Watch for Stiffness or Limping
Colder weather can highlight signs of arthritis or joint discomfort.
- If your pet is slower to get up or less keen to move, don’t assume it’s just “old age” – a vet check-up could help improve their comfort.
- Supplements, pain relief, and even laser therapy are options we may recommend.
3. Adjust Their Diet if Needed
Older pets often need fewer calories but more joint, heart, and immune system support.
- Consider senior-specific diets or prescription foods.
- Keep an eye on weight—extra kilos can worsen joint strain.
4. Keep Them Gently Active
While winter can tempt everyone to hibernate, gentle daily movement is essential.
- Short, regular walks for dogs (with a coat if needed).
- Playtime or climbing-friendly spaces for cats to keep joints and minds active.
5. Stay on Top of Grooming
Older pets may groom themselves less, especially if they have arthritis.
- Brush them regularly to prevent matting and stimulate circulation.
- Check nails more frequently—especially in cats who scratch less in winter.
6. Schedule a Winter Health Check
Winter is a great time for a routine senior health check. We can assess:
- Joint health and pain management options
- Weight and nutrition
- Heart, kidney, and dental health
- Any subtle changes that might not be obvious at home
