The story of WellPet

The story of WellPet

The WellPet Vet Group is made up of three veterinary clinics: Nepean Animal Hospital, Mountains Animal Hospital, and St Clair Animal Hospital. Each location is committed to providing compassionate, high-quality care for pets and their families across Western Sydney.

The WellPet story began in 2005 with the opening of Nepean Animal Hospital. Founded by Dr. Tony Karolis, the clinic was purpose-built in Regentville, just outside Glenmore Park. With its bright yellow exterior and convenient location, it quickly became known to locals as “the yellow vet.” What started as a small, dedicated team — just Dr. Tony and one veterinary nurse — steadily grew as the practice earned a reputation for friendly service and genuine care.

This humble beginning laid the groundwork for the WellPet Vet Group, which continues to focus on supporting pets and their families through every stage of life.

In 2006, Dr. Tony hired his first new graduate, Dr Andrew, who would later specialise in orthopaedic repairs in the USA and eventually open his own specialist hospital back here in Australia. This marked the beginning of a trend: newly graduated vets would join Nepean Animal Hospital to gain hands-on experience in both general practice and emergency care, before specialising in their field of choice.

During this time, Dr. Tony was providing an after-hours on-call service to pets in Greater Western Sydney and the Lower Mountains. As the business grew, so did the demand for services, and Dr. Tony was able to expand his team. What started as a small practice with one vet and one nurse quickly grew into a thriving clinic with 5-6 vets and 15 support staff within just a few years.

In 2008, Dr. Tony Karolis took a significant step by acquiring Mountains Animal Hospital in Blaxland. This spacious facility enabled WellPet to expand its services, including offering pet boarding for the Lower Mountains and Penrith areas.

The growth continued in 2013, when WellPet expanded once more, acquiring St Clair Animal Hospital, extending its reach to the east of Penrith.

By 2014, WellPet transitioned from an on-call after-hours service to a fully operational 24-hour clinic, with staff available around the clock. This allowed WellPet to provide immediate care for emergencies and continuous monitoring for critical patients. At the time, this was the first 24-hour clinic in the local area.

Over the years, WellPet has not only expanded its clinical services but also made a positive impact on the community. WellPet has partnered with WIRES to help injured wildlife, reunited numerous lost pets with their families, and provided vital first aid to injured stray animals. The clinic works closely with animal welfare groups, offering affordable desexing services to help control the local animal population and provide crucial healthcare to underserved animals.

In 2025, WellPet will celebrate 20 years of dedicated service, growth, and innovation in veterinary care.

From its humble beginnings, WellPet has grown to employ over 60 dedicated staff members, including veterinarians and nurses from around the world, across its three locations. The clinic’s ongoing commitment to high-quality care and community welfare remains at the heart of its mission.
