Saying goodbye to a beloved pet is one of the hardest moments we face as pet owners. At WellPet Vets, we understand how deeply you love your companion, and we’re here to support you with empathy and respect throughout this difficult time.
Knowing When It’s Time
Every pet’s journey is unique, and knowing when it’s time to say goodbye is one of the hardest decisions a pet owner can face – yet it can also be the kindest and most compassionate gift you can give your beloved companion.
Signs that your pet may be nearing the end of their life can include:
- Loss of interest in food, water, or favourite activities
- Difficulty standing, walking, or controlling bodily functions
- Persistent pain or discomfort despite medication
- Laboured breathing or prolonged restlessness
- Withdrawal or loss of interaction with family members
If you’re uncertain, our veterinarians can help guide you through assessing your pet’s quality of life and discuss what options are available.
Your Options for Euthanasia
We offer compassionate euthanasia services both in-clinic and through home visits, depending on what feels most comfortable for you and your pet.
- In-clinic: Many families choose this option for privacy and access to the full team’s support.
- Home visit: Some prefer their pet to remain in a familiar, peaceful environment surrounded by family.
Please let us know your preference when booking so we can ensure the process is as calm and gentle as possible. Home visits may be available depending on your location and our team’s availability.
During the Appointment
We understand this is an emotional time, and we aim to make the process peaceful and respectful. You can choose whether you’d like to be present throughout the procedure or say your goodbyes beforehand.
Here’s what to expect:
- Sedation: If required, your pet will receive a gentle sedative to help them relax.
- Catheter Placement: A small intravenous catheter is placed, usually in a front leg, to allow for a smooth and comfortable process. This is usually done in our treatment room, as this if often less stressful for the patient.
- Final Injection: The medication is a fast-acting anaesthetic that allows your pet to pass peacefully within seconds.
You’ll have as much time as you need to say goodbye before and after the procedure.
Aftercare and Cremation Options
You have several choices for your pet’s aftercare:
- Take your pet home for burial (where permitted by local council regulations).
- Group cremation (non-return): Your pet is respectfully cremated with others, and ashes are not returned.
- Private cremation (ashes returned): Your pet is cremated individually, and their ashes are returned to you in a chosen urn or keepsake.
We work closely with PetRest Cremations, who provide caring, professional aftercare services. However, you’re welcome to use any cremation company of your choice.
