Just like people, our pets can suffer from allergies. Allergies occur when the immune system overreacts to a normally harmless substance, such as pollen, food, or flea saliva. This reaction can leave pets itchy, uncomfortable, and prone to secondary infections if not managed properly.

Common Types of Allergies in Pets

Flea Allergy Dermatitis

One of the most common allergies in dogs and cats. Even a single flea bite can cause intense itching and irritation.

Environmental Allergies (Atopy)

Pets can react to pollens, grasses, moulds, or dust mites. These often cause seasonal symptoms, much like hay fever in humans.

Food Allergies

Some pets may develop sensitivities to certain proteins (e.g., chicken, beef, dairy) or ingredients in their diet.

Signs Your Pet May Have Allergies

Pets with allergies may show a variety of signs, including excessive scratching, licking, or chewing at their skin. You might notice red, inflamed, or flaky patches, recurring ear infections, or even hair loss and bald spots. Some pets scoot or lick around the anal area, while others—particularly those with food allergies—may experience gastrointestinal issues such as vomiting or diarrhoea.

Diagnosing Allergies

Pinpointing the exact cause of an allergy can be tricky. Your vet may recommend:

  • A thorough skin check to rule out parasites
  • Flea control trial to eliminate flea allergy as a cause
  • Food elimination diets to test for food allergies
  • Allergy testing for environmental triggers

Treatment and Management

While allergies can’t always be cured, they can usually be managed so your pet feels comfortable. Treatment may include:

  • Strict flea control year-round
  • Medicated shampoos or topical treatments
  • Special prescription diets or food trials
  • Medications to control itching and inflammation
  • Long-term allergy therapy (such as immunotherapy for environmental allergies)

Supporting Your Pet

If you suspect your pet has allergies, don’t wait until the itching gets worse. Allergies can quickly lead to secondary skin infections, which require more intensive treatment. The sooner we diagnose the cause, the sooner we can help your pet feel comfortable again.
